One would be greeted with the sound of tic-tic of a typewriter in the 70's and 80's while visiting an office for any business they wanted to conduct. This presented a very lively picture of that place and added to the ambience of the office. With the advent of computers typewriters have almost become obsolete as majority of the typing jobs have been taken up by computers. Nowadays typewriters can be found in a typing school, museum or with a vintage typewriter collector.
In those days a type written document used to be a thing that one could flaunt as it was considered sophisticated and not everyone could afford it. These days’ people have their own computers and printers thus making typed documents too common to be flaunted. Even kids in schools and colleges have their project reports and assignments neatly typed for submission which would have been a very uncommon sight in the early 80's.
Of course with the advent of technology things have changed for good. If a mistake was detected on a typed document that was typed on a typewriter the poor typist had to put in the same effort he or she had put in to type the whole document as the whole document had to be typed again right from scratch. Wastage of paper was immense and typing could not be learnt unless one practiced on a fresh piece of paper. There were limitations to the number of carbon copies one could get from a single typewriter. If a large number of copies were required then there was no option but to make photocopies of the same or ask several typists to type it again and again.
In these times one can easily make millions of copies by giving a single print command on the computer. The spell check feature of MS word has come as a blessing for those who never cared to get their spellings correct in school. Even if there is a mistake after the printouts have been generated the typist need not put in much effort just correct it in the document correct the mistake and take the good printout. It was never so easy.
